Part 3 - Bibliography
Compile a bibliography of three web sites on the topic on Internet protocols.
The collection of sites chosen should demonstrate a range of types of information
or different aspects of the topic. For each site you should write a short
description of the site.
RAD Data Communications. [online] Available from:
http://www2.rad.com/networks/1997/nettut/protocols.html
[Accessed 10 Jun 2003]
The http://www2.rad.com
site is extensive but they dedicate only one page to Internet
Protocols. The page states what a protocol is and why we have them. The Internet
Protocol suite is listed with simple explanations and a diagram showing how
the protocols fit along-side the OSI seven-layer model.
I chose this page because I liked the explanations given. They
are easy to read, allowing for an inexperienced audience to understand.
I did not read any bias, it was factually up-to-date and copyrighted
by ‘ 2003 RAD Data Communications, Ltd’ who seem to know what they are talking
about.
Cisco Systems. [online] Available from:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/ip.htm
[Accessed 11 Jun 2003]
This site describes Internet protocols as ‘open-system’ protocols.
It gives an excellent background and history. The site explains IP addressing,
address-format, address-classes, IP subnet-addressing, subnet-masking, IP
routing and much more, with diagrams and links.
The site is directed at a technical audience because the Internet
protocols are described at a technical level, with many words and acronyms
unexplained.
I chose this site because it was the most comprehensive and I
am familiar with Cisco products because I use them at work.
I could find no bias, it was factual, up-to-date and copyrighted
‘Cisco Systems, Inc’ who build IP products.
Jupitermedia. [online] Available from:
http://www.webopedia.com/Internet_and_Online_Services/Internet/Internet_Protocols
[Accessed 12 Jun 2003]
This site listed over 70 Internet protocols. Each protocol was
hyperlinked to an explanation with all terminology also hyperlinked to explanations.
The site said ‘IP specifies the format of packets’ and ‘the current version
of IP is IPv4’ and went on to explain.
The sites audience could be for the novice or the technical as
all information is explained.
I chose this site because it was very thorough with excellent
explanations and diagrams.
The site showed no bias, although there was lots of advertising,
it was up-to-date and created by ‘Jupitermedia’ which seems a reputable company.
Write a summary of your web search, including which search engines were
used, search terms and strategy utilised.
I used the MSN search engine. Entering ‘internet protocols’ in
the search box produced many sites and I browsed the first fifty. All the
sites were relative and I picked three to complete my bibliography. I did
not require a strategy as my first search produced more that was necessary
to complete the task and I did not need to refine the search as I found what
I was looking for straight away.
