First Chimney-breast being removed

17 June 2007 - I broke through into the room when I was still in the attic space taking the chimney down. I used a brick chisel and a normal hammer to ease the bricks up, then they just lifted off. You can see the bucket in the fireplace collecting rubble.

23 June 2007 - Some bricks needed to be chiseled flat to the wall so the walls could be plastered smoothly. Used a chisel on the brick and bashed it about twelve times, then bashed the brick with the hammer until it fell apart.

06 July 2007 - Plaster boarded the hole in the ceiling.

14 Jul 2007 - Hole in the ground is cemented and exactly level with the spirit level!

Second chimney-breast

03 Jun 2007. Removed the bricks one by one into the wheelbarrow and then carted them to the back garden where the brick pile was getting bigger and bigger!

03 Jun 2007. Covered in brick dust, my face mask has come off but the safety goggles are still on.

Removing the bricks

The bricks came off easily but the cupboard to the side was nailed in with 6 inch nails and had to be removed with a sledgehammer by my brother.

07 Jul 2007. Boarded up the ceiling ready for the plasterer. Insulated the loft where once there was a chimney space. Hole in the floor, covered with a damp proof sheet...

13 Jul 2007. Cemented ... and ... nearly level!
