Chimney stacks removed

09 Jun 2007 - The chimney as was. The hardest part was getting the top chimney pot off and down the ladder, it was really heavy.

With the pot removed the remaining bricks just lifted off. I put the bricks in a bucket and carried them down the ladder to a wheelbarrow to the back garden. We removed the mortar from the bricks and reused the good ones for the extension.

In the Attic

Took off the bricks as we entered the attic space. Much easier to remove the bricks from inside the attic but it was very warm.

Still removing the bricks, you can see this was a double chimney servicing two rooms creating two chimney-breasts. I set a time limit to allow enough time to make the roof water-tight before it got dark.

All the bricks had been removed from the attic space at this point and we were planning the roof patch-up

Chimney gone

This is me up on the roof after removing the tiles. The lead also needed removing and a wooded 'shelf' that sealed the chimney. I had to take off the upper tiles and the apex tiles so I could fix the tiles down properly.

The chimney has gone, the tiles will take a little time to weather and I got down safely and uninjured. The spare tiles were found in my garage.

It started raining for six weekends straight after this, not one drop of a leak! The rain also cleaned up the roof. All done in one sunny, dry day.

The other Chimney stack removed

02 Jun 2007 - This was chimney number one that I forgot to take a 'before' shot of.

I am already up there removing the bricks and bringing them down the not-so-secure ladder, in a bucket, three bricks at a time!

Done!
